Loneliness is deadlier than obesity, study suggests

I must admit to being quite surprised by the statistic in this article suggesting that loneliness is even more deadly than obesity. No stranger to Elder Care, I have certainly seen the benefits of spending quality time with a senior on their demeanor and general outlook on life. But I had no idea that the lack of such things played such a major role in their physical and mental decline:

Loneliness is deadlier than obesity and should be considered a major public health hazard, the biggest ever review into the problem has suggested.

But it is not enough to just throw a bunch of social workers out into the field to keep old folks company in their golden years… it’s important to understand that our seniors are incredibly set in their ways and would much prefer to be alone then too be babysat by total strangers.

There needs to be activities, with friends and family outside of the home, that will interest these folks. And the time spent with them needs to be meaningful to them… Not to those who are offering their time and availability to them.
